And, since crime is down 38% in the Grant Wood neighborhood over the last five years (while rising in the rest of Iowa City), someone must be doing something right there!! Between community policing, vigilant neighbors and our efforts to increase home ownership there (we have built 22 homes in the area the past five years), progress is being made in a positive direction.
Great source of news and things to do in Iowa City. Love this paper!
Best little magazine on earth. They actually do the journalism things. I would trust them to write a killer obituary for me. Keep up the good work, kids.
It would seem both prudent on the magazine's part to verify identity in advance of running any comments as well as having a policy of editorial override when someone makes stereotypical racist remarks. Such remarks can be heard in any bar but need not be given legitimacy by showing up in print. Mark Patton, Executive Director of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity.
I was disappointed when I read an opinion piece by someone named Marco Hecheveria which was both a highly volatile and racist. He says he "lives" in a Habitat house near Lakeside but I cannot verify his identity or where he lives. He implies he will sell in four years but we have no record of him owning any Habitat home.
Great magazine! Must read.
I'm biased, but aren't we all? I love that our small city supports independent writing and arts publishing.
